A US official called on Monday the leaders of long-divided Cyprus to give the maximum effort towards resolving their differences when they meet with United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan later this week.
Speaking after talks with a top Turkish diplomat in Ankara, US special envoy for Cyprus Tom Weston said Washington expected that Greek Cypriot President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash "will work with the secretary-general for a common goal of a comprehensive settlement."
According to AFP, the two leaders are scheduled to come together with Annan in the French capital of Paris on Friday. "We look at the discussions as something that should continue, that should be worked on very, very hard by all parties involved," Weston said.
The envoy was to travel on to Cyprus to meet with Denktash and Clerides. (Albawaba.com)
