About 250 million children - one in nine children globally - are living in countries affected by armed conflict, UNICEF said Tuesday, saying that it would need nearly $3 billion this year to help vulnerable children, AFP reported.

"The number of children trapped in humanitarian crisis around the world is both staggering and sobering," the UN children's agency said.

UNICEF said it had doubled its appeal in three years in response to increases in conflicts and extreme weather that force children from their homes, exposing them to violence, food shortage, disease, abuse, and threats to education.

Nearly $1.2 billion of the budget would go to war-torn Syria, where more than four million have fled as refugees and some 13.5 million inside the country are in immediate need of aid.
