Two ethnic Albanians died and one was injured when their vehicle came under fire in the center of the UN-run Yugoslav province of Kosovo, a United Nations spokesman said Saturday.

One of the two people killed in the shooting, which occurred late Friday in the town of Srbica, was a journalist with the daily newspaper Bota Sot, close to moderate Albanian leader Ibrahim Rugova, the spokesman said, speaking for the UN police force in Kosovo.

Another UN spokesman, Simon Haselock, said it was too early to tell if the incident was related to the political situation in Kosovo.

One of the victims died immediately in the shooting, while the other died later.

Tensions have been rising in Kosovo in the run-up to the first legislative elections since the province was placed under UN administration following the NATO-led bombing campaign of Yugoslavia which expelled federal forces in 1999.

The elections are scheduled for November 17 -- PRISTINA, Yugoslavia (AFP)
