The United Nations' human rights office said Tuesday that it has stopped updating the death toll from Syria's civil war since the number of casualties exceeded 100,000 in late July of 2013.
Spokesman for the U.N. Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights Rupert Colville said that the organization would not be providing up-to-date figures based on the lack of U.N. access on the ground in Syria and its inability to verify "source material" from others, according to AP.
Colville told reporters Tuesday in Geneva that the Syrian death toll that the U.N. had estimted was the result of an exhaustive effort to verify a combination of six different figures supplied by a variety of Syria-focused sources and "for the time being we're not updating those figures," AP reported.
Although the U.N. may not be updating the death toll figures, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights - which has a network of activists on the ground in Syria - reported that more than 130,000 people have died since the conflict broke out nearly three years ago.
