The Security Council will meet at 2200 GMT Monday to discuss the Middle East situation, at the request of the Palestinians, following the escalation in confrontations between the Palestinians and Israeli forces, the UN announced.
Some 51 people have been killed in the clashes triggered by a visit by Israeli leader Ariel Sharon to the al-Aqsa mosque compound on Temple Mount on Thursday.
Forty nine of the dead are Palestinians or Israeli Arabs.
About 1,000 people have been injured in the confrontations.
The Palestinian observer at the United Nations, Nasser Al-Kidwa, accused Israel Monday, of using "excessive lethal force" and war crimes in Jerusalem, and requested an emergency meeting of the Security Council.
Al-Kidwa said in his letter to the United Nations that "what is urgently needed at this time is ensuring the withdrawal of Israeli security forces" from Temple Mount in Jerusalem.
He called for an inquiry into "the events of the last few days," and said "we believe that several Israeli soldiers have committed war crimes and must be held accountable.” -- UNITED NATIONS (AFP)
