United Nations human rights experts are getting ready to begin visits to the Islamic republic of Iran in February 2003, following an open invitation extended by the Iranian government earlier this year, the world body announced Friday.

Tehran launched the invitation last July, overturning a six-year closure by the Islamic regime, which betrayed tensions over criticism of human rights conditions throughout the republic.

Experts from the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention are aiming to pay a visit to the country in February 2003, Jose Luis Diaz, a spokesman for the office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said.

They will be followed by another group dealing with enforced disappearances in April, and an expert on violence against women in May. A UN special rapporteur on freedom of expression would also try to examine conditions inside Iran at a later stage, Diaz added. (Albawaba.com)
