Central Asian experts from four countries and a top UN official began two days of talks behind closed doors in Geneva on Sunday on the political situation in Afghanistan, a United Nations spokeswoman said.

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan's special representative for Afghanistan, Francesc Vendrell, is chairing the meeting of the "Geneva Initiative" which groups representatives from the United States, Germany, Italy and Iran.

The meeting is scheduled to run Sunday and Monday, UN spokeswoman Marie Heuze said, without giving further details.

The informal group, made up of specialists on central Asian affairs from the four countries' chanceries, aims to analyze new approaches for finding a political and durable settlement in Afghanistan.
