The United Nations General Assembly appointed Kofi Annan by acclamation to a second five-year term as UN Secretary General on Friday.

Delegates applauded as the Assembly president, Harri Holkeri, asked them to endorse the unanimous recommendation of the Security Council to renew Annan's mandate six months before it expires on December 31.

Proposing Annan's reappointment, the council president, Anwarul Chowdhury of Bangladesh said: "He has excelled in his office."

A former head of peacekeeping operations, Annan, a 63-year-old Ghanaian, is the seventh secretary general since the founding of the UN in 1945, and the first to rise through the ranks of the secretariat -- UNITED NATIONS (AFP)
