Following a request submitted by Syria, the UN Security Council ON Monday held a consultations session during which it debated a draft resolution presented by Syria earlier this year, aiming at making the Middle East an area free of weapons of mass destruction.
At the beginning of the meeting, the Syrian permanent Envoy to the UN Faysal Miqdad said that time has come for the SC to discuss this draft, SANA reported.
He added that the region witnesses a dangerous and alarming situation where Israel possesses a huge nuclear arsenal in addition to other kinds of weapons of mass destruction, whereas Arab countries are parts in the treaty of nuclear non-proliferation.
He said that Israel still refuses to join the treaty and to remove its nuclear weapons and to let the international inspectors to inspect its installations.
