A village councilor in western Ukraine has thrown grenades on to the floor of a council meeting, wounding 26 people.

A village council meeting in western Ukraine turned into a scene of horror when one of the councilors threw several grenades into the room, injuring 26 people, six of them critically.

The incident happened on Friday morning in Keretsky, a village of about 4,000 people near the Hungarian border.

The attack was captured on a Facebook livestream, which showed the councilors discussing their budget for 2024 and other issues.

The footage shows one of the councilors, wearing a dark jacket, shouting and objecting to the budget. He then leaves the room, taking another man with him. A few minutes later, he returns and stands in front of the door. He then takes out several grenades from his pockets and tosses them into the middle of the room, saying “May I, may I?” before they explode.

The police said the attacker was taken to a hospital in a serious condition and that the SBU security service would investigate the incident as a “terrorist attack”.

They did not comment on the possible motive for the attack, which has shocked the country.

Many Ukrainians have access to weapons due to the war with Russia, but there is no evidence yet that the attack was related to the conflict.
