UAE's Thuraya Satellite Telecommunications will launch its commercial services in 20 countries this week, a top company official said Saturday.

"Thuraya is ready now for the actual launch of commercial services in about 20 countries. We are on target," Chairman Mohammed Omran told Gulf News.

He noted that Thuraya's commercial launch will mark an “auspicious service launch for the largest telecommunications project in the Middle East.”

After commercial launch, 40,000 Thuraya mobile phones will go live, he said.

Having signed about 40 service provider agreements, the company will shortly sign a similar agreement with Oman, he said.

Thuraya has already soft launched in a few countries including the UAE, the UK, Italy, Sudan, Qatar, France, Romania and Denmark.

Once fully rolled out, it will serve 99 countries in an area inhabited by 2.5 billion people. There are at least 2,000 users in these markets.

Omran said preliminary feedback in the soft launch continues to show a high level of subscriber satisfaction, not only with the phone features but also its design and ease of use – Albawaba.com
