The people of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and their visitors will always have a fresh reminder of the most important day in the country’s history, thanks to a monument the government plans to build as a symbol of the union.

The Dubai Municipality has announced it is setting up an elaborate flagpole at the Dar Al Ittihad site, the place that witnessed the formal establishment of the UAE.

The monument, which is expected to be completed by the end of November, consists of a flagpole reaching a height of 120m with base decorations reaching up to 23m.

According a statement by municipal officials, the flagpole will be made of structural steel treated against corrosion normally caused by external weather conditions and painted gold.

The flag will be raised and lowered automatically by special winding machine. Navigation lights will be installed according to the requirements of Civil Aviation Authority, the statement said.

The base decoration will consist of two hands, a symbol of unity, sitting 23m above ground level. The two hands will hold seven pearls: symbols of the seven emirates comprising the state. Sea waves of different sizes will be represented all around the base of the flagpole.

The Dh7million project will be one of the UAE’s landmark attractions, said the municipal officials - Albawaba.com
