The UAE has officially submitted to the United Nations a notification of its recent decision to sever ties with the Taliban government in Afghanistan, reported the official WAM news agency.

Abdul Aziz Al Shamisi, UAE representative to the UN, forwarded on Tuesday two separate letters in this respect to the UN's secretary general, Kofi Annan, and this month's chairman of the Security Council, the French representative, in which he called on them to include the letters among the UN official documents.

In his two letters, Shamisi reiterated the decision to sever relations, in which he expressed the UAE's regret that the Taliban government had disregarded pleas from the UAE and other countries to comply with the UN Security Council resolutions requiring them to hand over Osama bin Laden to stand trial.

Saudi Arabia also severed ties with Taliban on Tuesday.
