Around 151 animals, including goats and cows, were killed Saturday in UAE following the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in the Gulf state, reported the Gulf News.

UAE announced last week the discovery of at least 22 cases of the disease.

Special squads of soldiers were drafted into Al Hayer area near Dubai to slaughter the animals.

The carcasses were then dumped in a three meter deep trench, covered with wood, and burnt, said the paper.

Meanwhile, two large shipments of animals were turned back at the border between Ras Al Khaimah and Oman Saturday after veterinarians inspecting the animals suspected that some of them could be suffering from foot-and-mouth.

The animals, said the paper, were sent back to Oman only hours after a federal order tightening restrictions on animal imports came into force in the emirate.

The disease also hit UAE’s neighbor, Saudi Arabia.

Two calves infected with the foot-and-mouth disease were discovered in Yanbu area.

A commission, headed by Interior Minister Prince Nayef bin Abdul Aziz, has been formed to prevent the disease from spreading.

A ban on imports of meat and dairy products from Britain has been in effect in the two Gulf states since the outbreak of the disease.

The disease also hit Iran, Turkey and Palestine.

Farming and rural tourism has been ravaged in Britain where vast swathes of countryside have been turned into no-go areas, with people being asked to avoid all unnecessary journeys in infected regions - Albawaba.com
