Typhoon Nabi hit southwestern Japan on Tuesday causing more than 100,000 residents to flee their homes as floodwaters rose, causing landslides across the area.
The typhoon made landfall on Tuesday afternoon (6 a.m GMT), near Nagasaki on the island of Kyushu, Japan's third largest main island, according to Reuters.
About ten percent of Japan's 130 million residents reside on the island.
Troops were sent to help evacuate residents, according to Japan government officials. "There is expected to be further damage due to the typhoon so all agencies and ministries are joining together to respond," a spokesman told reporters.
Airlines in South Korea cancelled dozens of flights on Tuesday and ships were instructed to remain in port.
The area hit was overrun by rainfall, with Japanese television broadcasting images of roads under water.
