Two Kuwaiti judges offered their resignation Sunday to protest against criticism by MPs for their role in a controversial case involving a former minister accused of alleged fraud, reported Reuters.

Judges Abdelhady Al Attar and Ali Ahmad Boukmaz said in a statement that "because some MPs have exceeded the bounds and limits in practicing the freedom of speech in parliament, and because they hurt the inevitable respect for the judiciary in general and specifically the dignity of the members of the (ministerial investigation) committee.

"Because the investigation committee cannot continue in performing its duties in such a cloudy atmosphere...we ask for the termination of our attachment to the investigating committee to concentrate on our original duties at the Court of Appeals," the statement said, cited by the agency.

The government came under strong attack last week in parliament after a ministerial court dismissed a case against former oil and finance minister Sheikh Ali Al Khalifa Al Sabah, arguing that the complaint by the state was incomplete and vague.

The parliament gave the government until June 2 to file the original case against Sheikh Ali for his alleged role in a $130 million fraud case involving the state's oil tanker company.

Sheikh Ali has denied the charges, which were first filed against him in 1993 – Albawaba.com
