Two policemen were shot in Cairo by gunmen on a motorbike, the Interior Ministry told AFP.

Ministry spokesman Hani Abdel-Latif told the news agency "armed men on a motorcycle opened fire on the police before fleeing."

One officer was killed while the other was wounded.

The attack occurred near Cairo square where the officers were protecting branches of two foreign banks, Britain's HSBC and Union National Bank of the United Arab Emirates.

The police have been the target of numerous attacks since Morsi was ousted in 2013, the majority of which took place in the Sinai Peninsula.
