At least two people died in southern Yemen after police opened fire to disperse protests in several neighbourhoods. According to Reuters, dozens of demonstrators were detained as they tried to observe the 15th anniversary of the end of the country's civil war.
Nine other people were injured, including three policemen, in the protests on Tuesday, opposition members and local doctors said.
Nasser al-Khabagi, a local opposition leader, said police opened fire to break up the crowd, and shot Walid al-Suneidi, a political activist in his 20s. He died from head injuries, a doctor at the port city of Aden said.
The situation was tense in other towns, including Lahij, Abyan and Dhaleh.
Earlier this week, thousands took to the streets to observe the defeat of the south in 1994, chanting anti-government slogans and calling for the south to break away. According to Yemen Post, southerners complain that the north is economically more developed and that northerners are favored by the government.
