One Turkish soldier was killed and another injured in a firefight with Kurdish rebels in a remote mountain area of eastern Turkey, a military official said on Wednesday.

This month has been the southeast's bloodiest in years, with at least 11 Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) rebels and eight security personnel killed in clashes or landmine blasts.

The latest clash took place overnight in the rugged Alibogazi valley, a former guerrilla stronghold which snakes through the Munzur mountains in Tunceli province.

PKK militants opened fire on troops involved in a week-long operation backed by helicopters in pursuit of the rebels. Another soldier was killed in the same region in a guerrilla ambush last week. (Albawaba.com)
