Turkey's prime minister Abdullah Gul visits Jordan Monday for more talks on efforts to avoid a possible U.S.-led war with Iraq. He met with Jordanian Prime Minister Ali Abu Ragheb and later was due to meet with King Abdullah. These meetings come one day after a trip to Egypt, where he held similar talks with President Hosni Mubarak and top Arab League officials.

The secretary general of the Arab League (AL), Amr Musa announced in conclusion of his meeting with Gul that Turkey would join the AL as an observer.

In a joint press conference with Gul, Musa said "the talks also dealt with Turkey's joining of the AL as an observer and that it was agreed for a new beginning of Turkish- Arab relations."

Musa added "the Turkish request will be submitted to the next meeting of the AL council," adding that Gul's visit "is the first of its kind by a Turkish prime minister to the AL." (Albawaba.com)
