Turkish police on Saturday detained a man in Istanbul who confessed to the rape or attempted rape of 15 children over several months, Istanbul police chief Hasan Ozdemir said.

The man, identified as a telephone technician in his 30s, was caught after he unsuccessfully attempted to lure a nine and a 10-year-old girl in the Umraniye district in the city's European district, Ozdemir was quoted by Anatolia news agency as telling reporters.

When the girls' families alerted police authorities, the suspect - a father of a three and a five-year-old girl - was arrested and positively identified by his would-be victims.

During his testimony, the man confessed to 15 different incidents of rape or attempted rape over the last year, which have terrorized the Umraniye neighborhood and forced the police to set up special squads, Ozdemir said.

"He regrets what he has done, but says he cannot stop himself. It seems he has psychological problems," Ozdemir added. (Albawaba.com)
