Turkey’s parliament speaker on Tuesday recalled legislators for an extraordinary session on July 29 to vote on holding early polls in November, Anatolia news agency reported. The appeal came in response to an application by the government's far-right senior partner, the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP).

Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit reluctantly agreed earlier Tuesday to go ahead with early polls after the MHP threatened to quit the government if elections were delayed. The ailing Turkish Premier argues the polls could bring to power a popular pro-Islamic party in a potentially destabilizing development for the mainly Muslim but strictly secular nation. The opposition has lent support for the early election plan. (Albawaba.com)
