Tunisia's UGTT announced Wednesday that its leaders have been targeted with "serious threats" due to their role as mediators between the Islamist-led government and the opposition, according to AFP. The trade union described the threats as specifically designed to undermine a proposed national dialogue between the Ennahda Islamist party and the opposition groups to solve the political crisis that has enveloped the country since the July assisination of opposition MP Mohamed Brahmi.
The UGTT earlier this year drafted a roadmap that serves as an outline for political transition in the North African country and calls for the national dialogue talks. However, the UGTT has blamed Ennahda for stalling the transition process earlier this year when it failed to accept all the terms of the roadmap, such as the stipulation calling for its current Islamist leaders to step down from office within a three-week designated timeline.
The main trade union did not provide any further details about the threats.
