October 17th, Ras Al Khaimah. Tower Links Golf Club played host to their first school day of the new season. Students from the ages of 6 to 16 years, attending the local Choueifat School in Ras Al Khaimah, took part in an hour-long golf lesson at Tower Links Golf Academy on Tuesday 11th October.
Gary Constable, Director of Golf at Tower Links stated; “This was the second time we have invited school children to visit Tower Links for golf tuition and it was a great success! Many of the students had never even picked up a golf club before and to see the excitement on their face was well worth it. We are now in touch with other schools to provide them with the same opportunity.”
Mr. Bergh, Director of the International School of Choueifat said, “I thank Tower Links for giving our boys and girls a ‘taste’ of golf, but I would also like to thank them for inviting our students to take up a lifelong sport that develops many attributes such as etiquette, determination, patience, competitiveness, health and friendship.”
Tower Links have also recently announced that they will be introducing a junior development programme (JDP) starting from this month. The Tower Links team will work alongside the UAE Golf Association (U.G.A), to encourage youngsters like the students from Choueifat to take up the sport on a permanent basis.
“The Junior program has been high on our priority list since the opening of Tower Links last year,” said Gavin Chappell, Tower Link’s new PGA Head Golf Professional. “We have been actively visiting the schools in the Ras Al Khaimah to encourage young people to take up the sport, a project that is heavily supported by the owner of Tower Links, HH Sheikh Faisal Bin Saqr Al Qassimi.”
“The Junior Program will offer more flexibility, opportunities and incentives to our junior members as well as strengthening our junior golf profile and structure,” added Gary Constable
The programme is open for children from 5 to 17 years of age and will run for six weeks course for each group. All sessions will have a maximum of 5 juniors per class and each class will run for 45 minutes.
The programme is based on an order of merit, allowing each junior to progress from a beginner, to obtaining a handicap by completing a certain criteria and test before going onto the next level. The merit scheme starts from the Red award and moves up to Gold, which is the highest award.
Tower Links will be hosting a Junior Open tournament in 2006, which will be open to all UAE members. There will also be a number of other club tournaments for the Tower Links junior golfers throughout the season.
