Togo's parliament has amended the constitution to allow President Gnassingbe Eyadema to serve another term. Monday's vote changes Article 59 in the Togolese constitution that limited the president to two five-year terms. He would have been forced to step down next year.
Eyadema seized power in a coup in 1967. The 65-year-old leader had said he would respect the constitution, raising hopes that he would not stand in presidential elections due next year.
But the national assembly, which is dominated by members of President Eyadema's Rally of Togolese People, voted unanimously to amend the 1992 constitution. (Albawaba.com)
