Thai police said Thursday they had arrested two American citizens and a Vietnamese in connection with a bomb attack on the Vietnamese embassy in Bangkok believed to have been carried out by an armed opposition group.

Police chief General Pornsak Burongkaviboon said one of the three had confessed to planting the bombs and to collaborating with a fourth suspect, another US citizen thought to be a member of the Free Vietnam Movement.

A United States embassy official said the mission had not yet been notified of the arrests of the trio -- all American Vietnamese -- but that the Thai authorities had 48 hours to advise them.

Late last month 37 people were jailed for up to 20 years in Ho Chi Minh City for a wave of abortive sabotage attacks said to have been organized by the Free Vietnam Movement from Thai and Cambodian territory.

Thailand's military chief, Supreme Commander General Sampao Choosri, said Wednesday that he believed the bombs were planted in retaliation for the jailing -- BANGKOK (AFP)
