At least three people, including a gendarme sergeant, were killed and five others were wounded in an attack on a gendarmerie command station in Turkey's southeastern Diyarbakir province on Wednesday, the Turkish military said.

"Members of the separatist terrorist organization attacked the Ozekli Gendarmerie Station Command in Sur district with rocket-propelled grenades and long barreled weapons on [Wednesday] August 12, 2015, at 1.10 p.m. [1000 GMT].

"A gendarme sergeant was severely wounded in the incident, while four other gendarme privates and a village guard were slightly hurt. The gendarme sergeant succumbed to his wounds despite efforts to save him," the Turkish General Staff said in a statement on its website.

"Two terrorists were also neutralized and the clash ended at 1.30 p.m. [1030 GMT]," the statement added.

The wounded security personnel were taken to the Dicle University Medical Faculty Hospital for treatment.

Security forces have launched an operation in the area to nab the suspects behind the incident.

Turkish military usually uses the phrase "separatist terrorist organization" to refer to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the US and EU.
