Some 3,000 American Jews rallied in downtown Chicago Thursday to show their support for Israel amid the current outbreak of violence, organizers said Friday.
The crowd, which included hundreds of schoolchildren from as far as Indiana, heard from Avraham Burg, speaker of the Israeli Knesset and a member of the Labor Party, via satellite.
Chicago rabbis and local community leaders also addressed the gathering at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, according to Linda Haase, spokeswoman for the Jewish Federation/Jewish United Fund.
"We are gathered here today in solidarity with the Jewish State, noting with deep sadness and much trepidation the belligerent response in many Arab capitals to the events in Israel," Steve Nasatir, president of the Chicago branch of the organization, told the assembled crowd – CHICAGO (AFP)
