An explosion at a chemical plant in Shepherd, Texas, has raised concerns about potential chemical releases into the air, prompting nearby communities to take precautionary measures.
The incident occurred at Sound Resource Solutions along U.S. Highway 59, approximately 60 miles northeast of Houston, in San Jacinto County.
One individual sustained first-degree burns to the face, along with second and third-degree burns to the arms, and is currently receiving treatment at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center. Initially, a 5-mile shelter-in-place order was issued, but it was subsequently reduced to a 1-mile radius after officials evaluated the situation, as reported by the San Jacinto County Office of Emergency Management.
Additionally, the explosion led to the evacuation of a nearby private school, according to emergency officials. The cause of the explosion and the specific chemical involved remain unknown at this time. The plume resulting from the incident is reportedly heading towards the Livingston area, prompting Polk County Emergency Management to advise residents along U.S. Highway 59, from Goodrich to Leggett, to shelter in place and power down HVAC systems in homes and businesses.
Polk County officials stated, "At this time, the effects of the chemical in the air are unknown." As a result of the emergency response efforts, U.S. Highway 59 remains closed from FM 1988 to Exit 451B, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.
Efforts are underway to determine the cause of the explosion and to assess any potential risks associated with the chemicals involved. The situation is being closely monitored by local authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of the affected communities.
