Pollution control officials in Tehran warned Thursday elderly people and those suffering from respiratory
and cardiac problems as well as children to stay indoors, noting that poisonous smog is gradually blanketing the metropolis, reported the Iranian News Agency (IRNA).
Officials said pollution control measures in the city indicate a new rise in the level of carbon monoxide as well as suspended particles, emitting from cars. Carbon monoxide prevents oxygen from reaching the blood and suspended particles chokes breathing, particularly among children whose immune system is not developed yet, the Tehran Control Organization said.
Around two million vehicles commute in Tehran, which has a population of some 12 million, said the agency, adding that Tehranis use some 10 million liters
(2.5 million gallons) of fuel each day.
Officials are trying to cope with the pollution crisis which reportedly kills an estimated 4,600 people every year, IRNA said.
It added that the Tehran municipality is considering a long-term pollution control plan, which is expected to be implemented within a 10-year period – Albawaba.com
