Deputy commander of the Islamic Revolution's Guards Corps (IRGC), Brigadier Mohammad Baqer Zolqadr, has denied threatening to attack Persian Gulf oil infrastructure in the event of a US attack on Iran, an Iranian MP said.
According to Valiollah Shoja-Pourian, the parliament deputy from the central city of Behbahan in the Isfahan province, Zolqadr made the remarks during a meeting with 12 MPs of various political bent on Thursday night, during which he also presented a recorded tape of his statements.
"There was no mention of any probable attack on the regional oil wells on the tape," he said, echoing Zolqadr's exposition that "his statements had been misinterpreted probably first in an Arabic publication."
The deputy commander further stressed that the IRGC is totally loyal to the foreign policy, devised by the Supreme National Security Council, he was quoted as saying by IRNA.
The statements attributed to Zolqadr are related to his speech during a gathering of volunteer Basij forces last month, following US President George W. Bush's lumping of Iran as part of an "axis of evil" along with Iraq and North Korea. (Albawaba.com)
