Syrian regime airstrikes targeting rebels in the northwest overnight killed more than 20 civilians, the AP reported Thursday.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the air raids in the Idlib province aimed at opposition fighters killed 21 civilians, including five children, in the town of Saraqeb and surrounding the rebel-held city of Jisr al-Shughur. The city was the last government stronghold in the Idlib province before rebels claimed the area last week.
Activists Wednesday said the regime dropped barrel bombs on Saraqeb containing chlorine gas. The reports have not been verified yet, according to AP.
The government has retaliated against rebel groups since they began advancing in the Idlib province, capturing Jisr al-Shughur and a military base.
