Syrian President Bashar Assad will visit Tehran Wednesday, his first visit to the Islamic republic since he took power last July, reported the Iranian News Agency (IRNA).

The agency said that the Syrian president will hold talks with Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, President Mohammed Khatami and other senior officials. Meanwhile, the Tehran Times denied Monday that Bashar's visit aims at mediating between Iran and the United Arab Emirates in their dispute over three islands, currently under the Iranian sovereignty.

The paper quoted a Syrian official as saying that Bashar's visit will focus on enhancing Tehran-Damascus ties as well as discussing the current situation in the Middle East.

The Syrian President ended a two-day official visit to Abu Dhabi, where he congratulated President Zayed al-Nahyan on his recovery from a kidney operation.

He also discussed with the Emirati president ways of expanding bilateral ties between the two countries, press reports said -- Albawaba.com
