Syrian President Bashar Assad arrived Saturday in Tripoli and met with Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi, AFP reported.

The two leaders discussed bilateral relations, the situation in the Middle East and the Palestinian uprising, added the agency, which did not say how long Assad's visit was expected to last.

Assad, on his first visit to Libya since he came to power in July 2000, is heading a delegation of high-ranking officials including Foreign Minister Faruq Shareh, the agency said, citing the official JANA news agency.

Assad toured several Arab countries including Bahrain, UAE, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

The Lebanese daily As-Safi said that Assad’s tour aims at clarifying Syria's conditions that it will not resume talks with Israel unless the Jewish state abides by UN resolutions and fully withdraws from the Golan Heights, occupied in 1976.

The daily, meanwhile, quoted sources close to Assad as saying that he will head to Khartoum following his visit to Tripoli - Albawaba.com
