Reuters reports that the Syrian regime army has officially entered Raqqa province, and continues to push east toward the major Daesh stronghold of Raqqa city.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the Syrian regime army was backed by heavy Russian airstrikes. The two countries' forces moved east from Syria's Hama province, retaking multiple smaller towns from Daesh.

Raqqa is the main Daesh stronghold in Syria. The Syrian regime army and supporters have been moving across the country toward the city for weeks, but have not launched a full-on operation yet.
