Airstrikes conducted by the Syrian government on a marketplace in a rebel-held town Sunday killed at least 34 civilians, including women and children, AFP reported.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the air raids hit the northwestern town of Darkush near the Turkish border, only 20 kilometers from where rebels a day earlier claimed the Idlib town of Jisr al-Shughur

The Observatory's Director Rami Abdel Rahman told the AFP the death toll is expected to rise, as there are several more injured, many in serious condition.

Jisr al-Shughur was the last major town in the Idlib province controlled by the regime before it was captured by a coalition of opposition fighters, including al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Nusra Front. The government conducted dozens of retaliatory airstrikes on the town Sunday after it was captured.
