The main Jihadist group fighting for the Syrian rebels has been officially declared as a foreign terrorist organization by the U.S. government, according to U.S. media reports.

Jabhat al-Nusra, described as "the most aggressive and successful arm of the rebel force” in Syria, was registered on Monday by the U.S. government as an alias for al-Qaeda in Iraq.

The move was aimed at increasing international support for the Syrian rebels as many Western countries currently fear that funds would be channelled to Nusra.

By terming the group a 'terrorist organization', the U.S. has now made it illegal for Americans to have any financial dealings with Nusra.

However, the Jihadist group still has considerable support in Syria because of their fighting skills. The Free Syrian Army (FSA) signed a petition this week in support of Nusra. The FSA has called for demonstrations after Friday prayers this week to protest the U.S. government's decision.
