The Syrian opposition National Coalition (SNC) accused the regime of causing a "humanitarian disaster" in the Damascus suburb of Moadamiyet al-Sham, according to AFP sources. The SNC produced a statement that says that the regime has launched a "systematic campaign" to starve and displace the residents of the suburb. According to SNC, the southwest Damascus suburb has been under regime siege for months with food and water shortages rampant. Schools have also been closed down.

The coalition's statement further calls on the international community to "assume its  responsibilities towards the besieged areas of Syria by opening safe humanitarian corridors" by delivering "essential humanitarian aid to its residents and to evacuate hundreds of people who face death by starvation."

Moadamiyet al-Sham serves as a rebel base that is used by the opposition to attack the capital, and the regime has been trying to oust the anti-Assad actors ever since. The Damascus suburb also represents one of the sites where the reported August 21st sarin gas attack that sparked international attention to the Syrian conflict occurred.
