After reports from the Syrian state news agency earlier today that "terrorists" had fired chemical weapons in the north of the country, the rebel command for the area has fought back.
According to reports by Reuters, the opposition fighters said regime forces in fact launched the attack, which took place in Khan al-Assal near Aleppo on Tuesday.
Eye witnesses reported people choking from gas fumes after the weapon was fired into the area. Some analysts have claimed that chlorine was used in the rocket attack.
"The regime's army hit the town with a long-range missile equipped with a chemical warhead. It also hit the area with conventional weapons from the air and with artillery," Louay al-Meqdad, the political coordinator for the rebel command told Reuters.
The UK government has responded to the allegations saying that a "serious response" would be needed internationally, if the attack was confirmed as coming from chemical weapons.
