Syrian warplanes continued to crush Aleppo for a fifth consecutive day Thursday, according to Agence France-Presse.

Sources on the ground have said that Thursday's attacks have expanded to include villages southeast of Syria's second largest city.

According to the Aleppo Media Centre, "After four days of helicopters dropping barrel bombs on Aleppo city, the regime changed the direction of its raids and struck the village of Tal Alam near Sfeira."

Air strikes were also reported north of Aleppo city on the rebel-held villages of Daret Ezza, Marea, Minbej, and Anadan. The villages have been under rebel forces for over a year and have been frequent targets of regime bombings.

The Aleppo district Sheikh Najjar was also targeted with makeshift barrel bombs packed with TNT, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The Observatory has reported that at least 161 people have been killed in Aleppo since Sunday in the air attacks. Doctors Without Borders (MSF) puts the death toll in Aleppo City alone between Sunday and Wednesday at 189.

According to Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the Observatory, the air strikes is a way for the regime "to make the population turn against the rebels, so that the people themselves expel the fighters."

Part of Aleppo have been under rebel control for years since the conflict erupted in 2011.

It is estimated that more than 126, 000 people have died in Syria as a result of the civil war.
