Tournament in Ras Al Khaimah attracts 92 dignitaries and expatriate golfers
The 6th ASEAN Gulf Golf Championship (AGGC), an initiative that gathers dignitaries for a friendly game of golf with aims of strengthening camaraderie among ASEAN member countries, has witnessed another successful year after Syed Redzal Hisham from Malaysia claimed the overall championship title with 38 Stableford points. A total of 92 golfers competed in the tournament, which was held on April 4, 2008 at the RAK Tower Links Golf Club. Organised by My Curves Events, the event was attended by H.E. Libran Cabactulan, Philippine Ambassador to the UAE; H. E. Syed Hazrin, Consul General of Malaysia; H.E. Pasan Theparat, Consul General of Thailand; and H.E. Dileep Nair, Consul General of Singapore, in addition to a host of expatriate players from non-ASEAN countries.
In breezy conditions, the ever-smiling Syed Redzal played a steady round of golf throughout the day and clinched the title by a two stroke margin. Thailand’s Maneteer shot 36 points to emerge as the Men’s A Division champion, followed by Oliver Set from Philippines, who finished with 36 points but lost on a countback. Bill Wong from Singapore came third with 33 points, and fourth spot went to Mohd Noor Puasa from Malaysia with 32 points. Other big winners were Malaysia’s Roland Cheng who bagged the Men’s B Division championship title after beating Amir Yassin to second place and the flamboyant Jaafar Aris, who finished third. Top five prizes were also given to C division champions and three top prizes were awarded to winners of the Guest Division.
“With more than 1,000 ASEAN expatriate golfers based in the Gulf region today, the ASEAN Gulf Golf Championship is truly an important affair that unites member countries and opens up new opportunities and ideas for business partnerships,” said Muhammad Yusuff Mohammad, CEO, My Curves Events. “We are very pleased with the overwhelming success of the tournament, which has exceeded all the previous editions of this event. I would like to congratulate the winners and all the players for their exemplary performances, which made the event a memorable affair for all of us.”
Previous winners of the AGGC include Ronald (Philippines) in 1997, Ramli Sulaiman (Singapore) in 1998, Ricky Rozario (Philippines) in 2000, Hussein Al Juneid (Singapore) in 2002, and Yew Voon Chong (Singapore) who won the 2004 tournament. The day’s event started with the registration from 10 AM to 1 PM, which was followed by the shotgun tee-off at 1:45 PM. Playing 18 holes over 6,900 yards, the winners and runner-ups were awarded during a dinner program, which also enabled participants an opportunity to meet their counterparts from other ASEAN countries.
Viewed by many businessmen and expatriates as an effective platform for business networking, AGGC has been previously held at Nad Al Sheba Golf and Racing Club, Wadi Emirates Club and Arabian Ranches. By moving the event venue to Ras Al Khaimah, participants of the event were presented with new business opportunities within the rapidly growing emirate. As the tournament gains popularity among amateur golfers in the region, preparations for its next edition, which is being set in April 2009, are currently in progress. In addition to strong reception from participants, this year’s tournament was also supported by local companies, including Prime Express and LCL Interiors,
“Our participation at the 6th ASEAN Gulf Golf Championship is testament to our strong support for the ASEAN business community, which we consider as a formidable element in the region’s booming economy, especially in the interior fitting industry. It brings us pride to be a part of this highly successful event for the past three years, and we would like to extend our congratulations to the organisers, the winners and all who participated in the tournament,” concluded Abdul Hakim Asmaun, COO, LCL Interiors.
