In a tricky seven-hour operation, surgeons have succeeded in re-attaching the hand of a 31-year-old man which had been severed in an accident. The hand, packed in ice, was rushed along with the traumatized patient from Mafraq Hospital to the UAE’s Sheikh Khalifa Medical Center where two plastic surgeons battled to re-connect the bones and the delicate tendons, veins and arteries, said a press report.
Plastic surgeon Mark Hill was quoted by Gulf News as saying that they received a call that a man's hand had been amputated in a work site accident.
"He was transferred to us from Mafraq Hospital. He came here with his hand preserved in a plastic bag full of ice and he had bandages on to stop the bleeding."
Hill, who conducted the operation along with Dr Wayne Smith, said, "This is the first case of an amputated hand that we received here in the hospital and it was very successful." The patient's condition is improving and he will slowly regain movement of his hand, Hill said – Albawaba.com
