Chinese Premier, Zhu Rongji and visiting German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder launched the trial operation of Shanghai's new magnetic levitation (Maglev) train Tuesday, reported state media.
The 30 km Transrapid Maglev train, a high-speed transport system with an operational speed of 430 km/h, links the downtown Shanghai area with Pudong International Airport in just eight minutes. The Transrapid consortium, which includes the German government as well as Siemens and ThysseKrupp, designed the 10 billion yuan ($1.2 billion) project that anticipates launch in 2004. (Albawaba.com)
