Around 5,000 Sudanese took to the streets in Khartoum Wednesday to show their support for Baghdad and denounce the threatened US war against Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.
Supporters of political parties, Muslim scholars, workers, professionals, women and students participated in the march organized by the Popular Organization for Solidarity with Peoples (POSP), an AFP correspondent said.
The demonstrators gathered in front of the Republican Palace where delegates of the POSP member organizations and Iraqi ambassador Ahmed Taes Abdallah made fiery speeches slamming the United States.
An effigy of United States President George W. Bush, wrapped in the US and Israeli flags, with "the corpse of imperialism" written on them, was torn up before it was torched by the demonstrators.
Subsequently, the protestors marched to the foreign ministry where their leaders handed an official protest for Foreign Minister Mustafa Osman Ismail to deliver to the US embassy in Sudan’s capital.
"We strongly denounce your administration's plans for an armed aggression on the Arab, Muslim people in sisterly Iraq, targeting not only Iraq but also all the Arab and Muslim nations," said the message addressed to President Bush.
Furthermore, it charged that US foreign policy was run by "the neo-imperialists, representing the far Christian right, and the Zionists who control power in the States."
