ALBAWABA- At least 40 people have died in Sudan's western Darfur region, amid the worst cholera outbreak in years in the country, which has been embroiled in a war for more than two years, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said today.
"In addition to an all-out war, the people of Sudan are now suffering from the worst cholera outbreak the country has seen in years," the organization said in a statement.
"In Darfur alone, MSF teams have treated more than 2,300 patients and recorded 40 deaths in the past week."
Cholera is an acute diarrheal infection caused by the consumption of contaminated food or water, according to the World Health Organization, which considers it "an indicator of inequality and lack of social and economic development."
