ALBAWABA- Sudan’s Sovereign Council head and army commander, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, made a brief visit to Doha on Tuesday, holding talks with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad on security, economic cooperation, and regional coordination.

The visit comes as Sudan’s government reasserts control in Khartoum and seeks to strengthen both military and economic ties regionally and internationally.

According to a statement from the Sovereign Council, the two leaders discussed the course of Sudanese-Qatari relations and ways to enhance bilateral cooperation “in the interests of both peoples.”

Al-Burhan expressed appreciation for Qatar’s continued support for Sudan and emphasized the historic and enduring ties between the two countries.

High-level diplomatic sources told the Sudan Tribune that security coordination was a central topic of the Doha talks, including initiatives to stabilize Sudan amid continued unrest.

The sources indicated that Al-Burhan outlined ongoing army operations in Kordofan and Darfur, particularly in Dinlling, where government forces have made recent advances, while also addressing persistent attacks by RSF militants in the region.

The discussions also touched on Sudan’s economic challenges, with Al-Burhan seeking Qatari support and exploring ways to bolster cooperation with other regional partners, particularly Turkey, where a visit to Ankara is expected in February.

Al-Burhan’s visit comes in the broader context of intensified diplomatic efforts by Saudi Arabia and Egypt to counter the destabilizing role of the UAE in Sudan, Somalia, and Yemen, amid heightened regional tensions and U.S.-led initiatives to stabilize the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea corridor.
