ALBAWABA - As Storm Bora continues to wreak havoc on Greece, at least two people have been reportedly killed due to the extreme weather conditions, triggering widespread flooding in the islands of Lemnos and Rhodes.
On Saturday, the civil protection service issued an emergency alert for torrential rainfall and severe gusts of wind in the northeast, center, and region surrounding Athens.
The storm destroyed roads, houses, and commercial structures overnight on Saturday and Sunday on Rhodes, an island with a thriving tourism economy, according to regional governor George Hadjimarkos.
On Saturday, rushing floodwaters carried away a 57-year-old livestock farmer from the village of Kontias on the northern Aegean island of Lemnos. Near the overflowing Kontias dam, the man's car got stuck in mud and he struggled to release it. Unfortunately, rescue personnel were only able to reach the area a few hours later to find the man dead.
In a separate accident, a 70-year-old Lemnos homeowner was cleaning his house during the harsh weather when he fell down slick stairs and received a fatal head injury. The poor man was already dead when he was taken to the Myrina Hospital.
The National Meteorological Service of Greece predicts that severe weather will continue in several parts of the country until Monday, December 2, with Central and Northern Greece severely affected.
The eastern and southern regions, including the Cyclades, Crete, and the Dodecanese, may experience additional rain and strong gusts before conditions improve on Tuesday.
