STMicro earmarks $300m for New IC Assembly Plant in Morocco

STMicroelectronics plans to invest a total of $300 million in a new semiconductor packaging and assembly plant in Morocco, which will be able to produce up to 25 million ICs a day when fully equipped, Semiconductor Business News reported.  

The company dedicated the first phase of the new facility on April 3rd, saying the plant now has the capacity for 2.3 million IC per day, said the news service. 

STMicroelectronics originally set up a plant in Bouskoura in 1979, and the company currently employs more than 4,800 workers in Morocco plants.  

The new plant contains final assembly and testing operations. STMicroelectronics said it plans to invest about $107 million in new buildings at the site, which will include 32,000 square meters of cleanroom for production and 4,000 square meters of warehouse space. 

About 2,500 workers will be employed in the new facility is at full capacity, according to the European semiconductor company – Albawaba.com
