It gives me great pleasure to welcome you here at this press conference to announce the launch of the Middle East Waste Summit which will be held at the Dubai Airport Expo Centre in March 2009.
The Summit will be organized by Turret-Middle East, represented today by the chairman Mr. Richard Hease and fully supported by Dubai Municipality.
The Middle East Waste Summit will cover many sectors including: Waste Transfer, Collection and Transportation; Landfill and Composting Equipment; Volume reduction and Material Handling, Recycling and Processing. There has been a great demand to have such an exhibition, especially with the vast development taking place in Dubai and the subsequent great quantities of waste generated which in all its categories (General waste, Horticultural waste) amounts to around 10,000 tons per day and more than 30,000 tons of Construction & Demolition waste per day. These figures urge the need for the world to exploit and make use of the latest technologies in the field of waste management.
The profile of the Exhibition will present solutions to cater to the need of the Waste Management and will give solutions that the private and public sector can use and implement. Recycling can make good environmental and economic sense given the right conditions. It will conserve natural resources, save energy in production and transport, reduce risks of pollution and ultimately may produce goods that are less expensive. It is therefore an increasingly important waste management option. But there are other options like land filling and incineration which must and will be studied in the realm of applying the best and most optimum solutions suitable to our country. This is when we will need to look for the most experienced and competent companies in that field.
The Middle East Waste Summit will call on the international community to respond to their responsibilities and the growing requirement of waste management and emphasize the importance of protecting the environment for future generations.
Middle East Waste Summit has the potential of being a very large event. We hope that the summit will be the first step towards many others to come which will not only help us in finding the right solutions to the waste industry but also add an integral and beneficial part to Dubai by ensuring a more sustainable environment.
I wish a mutual success to Turret and Dubai Municipality in our future cooperation and endeavor and hope the Summit will meet everyone’s expectation.
