ALBAWABA - On his third foreign trip in the past two weeks, Sudanese Armed Forces leader Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan flew to Qatar today, and is set to meet with Qatar's emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
In a statement, the Sovereignty Council of Sudan said: "Burhan and Qatar’s Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani will discuss bilateral relations, issues of common interest, and the situation in Sudan,".
The council's chairman, Gen Al Burhan, appears to be trying to rally regional support at a time when the army is engaged in a costly fight with the rival paramilitary force Rapid Support Forces.
The war, which is centered in Khartoum and the western Darfur region, has resulted in a severe humanitarian crisis, displacing over five million people.
This visit follows al-Burhan issued a landmark decision to dissolve the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) due to their severe violations against civilians and directed the Sudanese army and relevant authorities to immediately implement this decision.
al-Burhan made his first public appearance since the war on August 24th at the Wadi Sayyidna military base in Khartoum, addressing his soldiers and supporters.
Situation in Sudan
The power struggle, which erupted on April 15, pitted Sudanese Military General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan against his former deputy chairman Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo "Hemedti" over who would settle in the leading position in the country.
Thousands of people have been killed and nearly 4 million have been displaced since the combat began on April 15 between the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces, primarily in Khartoum and Darfur state.
According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), at least 60 people were killed and 250 were injured in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur state. Furthermore, at least 50,000 people have fled their homes, and humanitarian aid distribution has been hampered by road closures in many locations.
